The phrase, “You are what you eat” is
common among most nutritionists. It is relevant to my nutrition and health
because it defines who I am based on what I eat. For sure, I know that food
provides nutrients and energy that are important to keep us alive and strong,
to support growth, and to allow reproduction. However, food choices have been made
available through modern technology, and this contributes to a diet that consists
of too much or little of some of the nutrients our bodies need. Staying healthy
is the most important thing that one can do to himself or herself. Ways of
maintaining good health are eating healthy foods, getting enough rest, and keeping
good hygiene. A diet with enough nutrients is a necessity to stay healthy, and
that can be obtained by taking multivitamins and other kinds of supplementing
nutrients. Having a day off is also a great thing to do to maintain a healthy
living. In essence, you are what you eat.  

Further, the phrase, “You are what you
eat” helps me to understand that eating healthy food means living a healthy
life. It is, therefore, imperative to ensure my meal always have the six
classes of nutrients including carbohydrates, lipids, proteins, water,
vitamins, and minerals. Carbohydrates, lipids, and proteins are energy giving
foods (Insel
12).
However, I also understand that although alcohol provides energy, it is not a
nutrient because it is not necessary for our lives. Water and other
energy-yielding nutrients are known as macronutrients (Insel
12).
On the other hand, vitamins and minerals are classified as micronutrients because
they are needed in small amounts in the diet (Smolin &
Grosvenor
16).
Carbohydrates, proteins, lipids, and vitamins are organic nutrients while minerals
and water are inorganic nutrients. Fresh fruits and vegetables contain vitamins
and nutrients that give us a strong immune system.

In conclusion, what I choose to eat defines
me. For instance, if I eat natural foods, my body will take in high level of
nutrients, unlike when I take fortified food. For example, milk that is directly
from the cow is healthier than processed milk from the factory. Therefore, I
should ensure my meals have sufficient nutrients to avoid deficiencies. I
should be concerned with what I consume because “I am what I eat.”
