The Institute of Medicine was established in 1970 by the National Academy of Sciences to evaluate nursing education. To achieve and maintain the goal, nursing education has to be evaluated frequently. In 2008, the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF) and the Institute of Medicine (IOM) proposed a program to evaluate and renovate the nursing profession. The selected Committee from IOM made suggestions for future nursing. Nurses are chief in providing care among all other health care professionals. Nursing education has important role in providing safe practice.
Nurses are the dominant to provide safe, quality, patient-centered, accessible, and affordable care to patient. IOM report recommends The Future of Nursing: Leading Change, Advancing Health. The committee reveals that nursing profession faces many challenges in nursing education system and some of the solutions that will be required to advance the system. It determined that nurses should achieve higher levels of education and training through an improved education system that promote academic progression. (RWJF&IOM, 2008). The committee measured education levels in its determination to envision the prospect of the nursing practice.
The committee established four recommendations that presented in this report: 1) Nurse should continue the education to the full range and throughout their career. 2) Nurses should achieve higher levels of education and training through an improved education system that endorses continuous academic progression. 3) Nurses should be full associates, with doctors and other multi-disciplinary teams, in restructuring health care in the United States. 4) Effective personnel scheduling and policy making require improved documents collection and better-quality information structure.
The 20th century nursing educations are not sufficient for dealing with more complicated diseases and more complex needs of patients in the 21st century. The patient needs, competency between hospitals, care environment settings, advance technology have become more complex, the need to achieve the most eminent competency and education, to provide high-quality care. The scope and knowledge of education is implemented in leadership, health policy, system improvement, research and evidence-based practice, and teamwork and collaboration.
The IOM committee also suggests the nurses to learn technological and information management systems along with other health professionals to improve the quality of care and meet the needs of population. The higher education like PHD and doctor of nursing (DNP) will be promising for nurses to achieve higher positions in their career and that will help in leadership, preparation of health policy, research and health practice improvement. In some states, licensed nurse practitioner can see patient and write prescriptions without doctor’s supervision.
The bachelor’s degree in nursing will help to develop the skills, critical thinking and professionalism needed to deliver safe nursing practice. Also nurse residency programs are focused in acute care hospitals and outsized health systems. Nurses should achieve higher levels of education and training through an improved education system that promotes continuous educational progression. NURSES ARE IN THE ROLE OF LEADERS A nurse never thinks about becoming a leader when they begin their career. New graduates always excited to know the profession first. As the career goes on leadership is essential to evolving the profession.
The leadership associated competencies should be added throughout nursing education. Leadership development and tutoring program should be made available for nurses. Make sure nurses are ready to accept nursing leadership role. Bring up a culture that encourages and ideals leadership needs. All nurses from students to researchers must take accountability for their individual and professional development by developing competencies. They must practice these competencies in all area and all settings. This would be in hospitals, Communities, schools, boards, and or in any other settings.
Also this can be inside nursing or outside nursing with other health professions. This will help to tutor others and improve scope of nursing practice. The leadership in nursing will help to develop corporations and improve associates within health care environment. To become a leader nurse has to achieve higher education along with other competencies. Recommendations from the IOM report, most the challenges and issues in nursing education taken care by organizations, federal and state government so that, more nurses are involved in leadership program.
Applying and exploiting in the recommendations from the Institute of Medicine (IOM) Future of Nursing Committee will facilitate nursing’s ability to continue meeting the leadership in nursing that will help to meet the demand for safe, quality, patient-centered, accessible, and affordable patient care. According to IOM report higher education in nursing promotes nurse to work as a primary care. Nurses work in different areas like hospitals, long term care facilities and many other places with different levels of education and holding different position.
When a licensed practical nurse provides care to a patient as a bedside nurse, nurse scientist does the research to evaluate more effective way of caring for patients and promoting health. The committee considered nurses across roles, settings, and education levels in its effort to visualize the future of the profession. In 2004, the National Quality Forum (NQF) recognized the initial set of nationally standard study given current concerns about a shortage of primary care health professionals, the committee paid specific consideration to the role of nurses, especially APRNs in this area.
Now –a day nurse practitioner are working with physicians to deliver most of the primary care. They can see patient, diagnose and treat without physicians. Physicians account for 287,000 primary care providers, NPs for 83,000, and physician assistants for 23,000 (HRSA, 2008; Steinwald,2008). Nurses must be prepared to meet diverse patients’ needs; function as leaders; and advance science that benefits patients and the capacity of health professionals to deliver safe, quality patient-centered care. If new nurses are to succeed in this complex and evolving health care system, nursing education needs to be transformed.
