The compulsion from the United States, however,

The Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty was an international treaty created to prevent the outspread and promote peacefulness among countries over nuclear weapons. The goal of the committee is to have complete disarmament of these weapons and it is being furthered with this agreement. A total of 191 states have joined this agreement, however North Korea has never come into compliance with the NPT and has withdrawn. This state along with India, Israel, Pakistan and South Sudan, have not joined. Therefore, they will not receive what the non-nuclear-weapon states do, which is to share the benefits of peaceful nuclear technology, and to pursue an attempt of an untroubled world where nuclear arsenals could be eliminated. South Korea is a major country affected by nuclear weapons, due to its neighbor North Korea. It  has maintained a bilateral security alliance with the United States since the Korean War in 1950. Moreover,  South Korea first came into play with nuclear technology in the 1950s, Changes in the international security environment is what encouraged South Korea’s decision to begin a nuclear weapons program. This was due to compulsion from the United States, however, the capital of this state, Seoul abandoned this program and signed the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT). South Korea is often times fearful of what North Korea’s next move may be. In fact, both countries in the korean peninsula signed the Joint Declaration on the Denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula. In this agreement, Seoul and Pyongyang agreed not “to test, manufacture, produce, receive, possess, store, deploy or use nuclear weapons,” and not to “possess nuclear reprocessing and uranium enrichment facilities.” But, due to recent conflicts North Korea has failed to abide by these rules leaving South Korea with its well-developed civil nuclear sector. But, as of June 2017 south korea has agreed to phase out its nuclear power, and hult the extension of the 3 nuclear powers under construction. South Korea could most definitely change the balance of power on the Korean peninsula due to the fact that it has enough raw material and equipment to produce a nuclear weapon. But has chosen not to, due to its allegiance to the NPT. Nuclear Energy is a very dangerous issue regarding all states, and can impact the peacefulness and future’s of these states. South Korea has abided by the rules of the NPT and hopes all states will also follow until the ultimate goal of diminishing nuclear weapons is accomplished. South Korea also hopes for its future to include countries who are not yet in the NPT to join. Not only to ensure safety for south korea, but to also get one step closer to world peace. In this committee South Korea also hopes to further educate citizens over the potential harm nuclear weapons can cause. This will not only strengthen states individually, but can ultimately strengthen the NPT as a whole. If all nations come together and try to make the use of nuclear energy, a top priority, it will longer have to be an issue.
