This is the question that needs to be answered. Going forward, this paper will detail which form of publishing was preferred in the past and how it is preferred now.

You will be given a brief history on early video games to help facilitate curiosity for the industry. You will even begin to understand the trials and tribulations of Indies developers and see how major home console manufactures play a role in development of Indies games. Also, you will gain insight on how Indies developers impact the video game industry as a whole. Write your introduction here and when finished delete the italic instructions. A Brief History in Early Video Games Believe it or not, video games can be traced all the way back to the late sass. An early cathode ray tube- based missile defense system was technically the very first video game program (Princeton Para 1). The missile defense system was not adopted into a simple video game till the sass. By the late sass and the sass, more and more computer games were developed. Thus, computer games would increase in sophistication and complexity. Who would have thought this was only the beginning?

Eventually computer games began to diversify into the media that we see today. As time went on video games began to flourish successfully in the United States, Japan, and Europe. Then it happened: the first great video game crash in 1977. During this time, companies were forced to sell their older systems, which caused the market to flood. Just six years later, the industry had another great crash and collapsed the gaming industry. Only this time the market was saturated with poor quality games (Princeton Para 2).

In turn, this supposedly solidified the collapse of the rich video game home console market in the United States. Even though the home console market had collapsed, the computer gaming sector remained largely unaffected and continued to thrive. It wasn’t until a small Japanese trading card company came along wanting a piece of the equation. During this time the arcade era in the United States was a booming, viable part of the gaming industry. Nintendo entered the market in the sass with a game called Radarscope (Maw, The game failed miserably and newest recruit, Gushier Mammoth, a shot.

Midmost way of thinking that video games could tell a story led to Nineteen’s first major hit, Donkey Kong, which went on to sell 100 million arcade cabinets within the first year (Maw, Soon after, Nintendo launched into the mobile market with their handheld gaming console, Gamey and the hit game known as Tetras. This ultimately led to Nintendo dominating not only the mom console market but also the handheld market in the late sass and early sass (Agrarianism). Video games have continued to evolve in sophistication and complexity.

In present day you can play video games on mobile phones, tablets, PC’s, TV’s, etc. Just to name a few. With the launch of the up and coming eighth generation home consoles, Palpitation 4 and Oxbow One, gaming will now be taking the leap into cloud based gaming. The Big Three Home console manufacturers are the dominant source in which games are played and created in the present day. In Just thirty years, there have been many great and not so great home consoles. None have generated the kind of success that has been enjoyed by Sonny’s Palpitation brand, Microsoft’s Oxbow brand, and Nineteen’s brand of consoles.

These three console makers are the dominant platforms that most games are developed for. Many gamers around the world enjoy triple A and Indies games that can be found on any of these home consoles. Origin of Palpitation Brand The origin of Sonny’s Palpitation brand was the idea of Ken Guttural in 1988. It was supposed to be a collaboration between Nintendo and Sony to supply CD-Rooms to the popular Family (Nintendo Entertainment System). Later that year, the day after SEES Nintendo broke the partnership with Sony, it was at that moment that the Palpitation was born to rival Nintendo.

In modern day, Sonny’s Palpitation is one of the big three in the industry and has numerous developers working on games for their home console (SIGN Para 2). Origin of Oxbow Brand The origin of the Oxbow brand began as a complete mystery to the gaming world. Microsoft had major plans to launch a new home console system amongst Nintendo, Sony, and Saga. It Oxbow began as a tech demo at E 2000 that had crowds of people lining up for an hour to see what the new console was about (COM Para 3). A year later the Oxbow was finally revealed at SEES 2001 to mixed reactions. In November of 2001 the original Oxbow launched with Bill Gates at the helm.

Origin of Nintendo Home Console As stated above, Nintendo began as a Japanese trading card company. The Famine was Nineteen’s first console in 1983. In 1985, Nintendo launched the ONES in North America with the game Super Mario Brow. (Para 5). In the following years the company would go on to make five more generations of home consoles. Nintendo is known as the company with the most original and famous Pips in the gaming industry. Indies Developers: Self-publishing Vs.. Traditional Publishing The definition of an Indies Developer is that they do not have controlling interests or creative limitations with their game.

They also do not require publisher’s approval as traditional game developers do. All design decisions are not limited by the budget of the developer. Also, Indies Developer’s usually work in smaller teams, making the workload heavier on individuals. More often than not Indies developers have the freedom to experiment artistically without limitation. Thus, it is known that they produce some, if not the amen is automatically perceived as low unless you team up with a reputable publisher (Riveted, Para 3). The partnering of an Indies developer and publisher can be seen as an endorsement to the consumer.

Thus, allowing the Indies’s game developer the perception that it is of higher quality and gain more attention from the media. This only happens when an Indies partners with a reputable publisher. When there is positive feed back for their game the effect can garner more attention to lesser-known games that the Indies developer may have created (Riveted, Para 3). As stated above, publishers can be a godsend or a blockade. Developers often operate independently because they neglect the added value of the publisher and merely focus on the revenue they have to give up instead”(Riveted, Para 5).

In the world of videotapes this can be difficult for lesser-known or even unknown developers to get a foot in the door. An Indies developer should love what they do. In game development, it is not always apparent what skills they will need in order to get the job done. Indies developers should always ask themselves who their customers are (Phone, Para 2). “It would be awfully embarrassing to spend money registering a equines name only to find that someone else already owns the website 8? ‘ (Phone Para 5).

In a sense there is no need to make a game that nobody wants, so figure out a solution and go for it. As stated by Phone, “Whether people find you online or meet you in person make it easy for them to know what you’re about” (Para 9). Indies developer’s should also be aware of what makes them care about their product and how others would perceive their game (Phone, Para 2). Let’s define the meaning of self-publishing. Self-publishing is a form of funding a project without the need for a publisher. This is a great risk vs.. Award system that can affect any independent company.

Now, let’s define the meaning of traditional publishing. Traditional publishing is to have a publisher fund a project, but have strict policies that can sway the development of a project. In the world of videotapes there has been an ongoing struggle for Indies developers to get their games to market. The reasoning behind this is because of the strict policies that are in place that have prevented a challenge for Indies to succeed in the industry. When you are self-publishing you should be prepared to engage and immerse yourself in the digital market.

Stated by Rebecca Anne Jones, “Don’t be too precious about your app: a publisher knows the industry standards so they will assess the quality of your game and will give you honest feedback” (Para 3). In the digital market there are tons of articles and reading that you can use to help your cause Cones, Para 4). Be prepared to network yourself and your business if you hope to succeed. “Talk to other developers, go to conferences, network your socks off and get as many tips from your peers as possible” Cones Para 4). This meaner conversations with fellow developers that will help you gain ideas.

You can also attend conferences to allow yourself networking avenues as you go forward Cones, Para 4). “Build up your own contact list of target press and reviewers, then make sure you actually write press releases and send out promo codes” Cones Para 5). If possible, make contact with employees of a mobile app store. If those employees like the game they are more likely to recommend it to their customers. Conclusion To answer the question that was proposed in the introduction, Indies developers: opinion that an Indies developer should go with self-publishing.

The reason is due to he fact that the Indies developer is allotted freedom in how their game is developed. With this freedom comes risk and the developer is solely responsible for all outcomes of the game. Even though they have the backing of the publisher, the publisher will not take the heat if the game flops commercially. Once I did this it was Just a matter of plugging in what needed to be said. When that step was completed I proof read the paper in its entirety and made the necessary correction. Step 4. The information that was provided from my research was tremendous. In order to determine what I wanted to put in my paper I had to examine all of the respected parts individually. This process was long but bore the fruits success in the long run. Step 5. Employ meaningful self-dialogue throughout the process, including written or drawn prompts as well as spoken words. (In this step, explain how you organized the assignment using notes, tables, diagrams, and drawings. ) As stated in other assignments I have a unique thought process in how I organize my mental notes. The process was very stressful this time around because it had been a while since I had to do a full research paper.
