Patriotism Essay

To show patriotism for one’s country means to give devoted love, support, and defense to one’s country. It means to have a national loyalty. As U. S. citizens it is our duty to stand by our country through thick and thin. Right now our country is in a time of need, and our economy is suffering. We should respect and support President Obama whether we like him or not. Going against him is only making matters worse, and dividing our nation. Our nation was founded upon certain principles, but lately we seem to have strayed away from them, showing a decline in our patriotism.

In the news there have been circulating rumors claiming that Obama in not a fit president because he is not a true American citizen. However, it is a known fact that President Obama was born in Hawaii. Last time I checked Hawaii is one of our 50 states here in the U. S. A. According to Article II of the Constitution, “No person except a natural born citizen of the United States,…shall be eligible to the office of President. ” Obama is indeed and American citizen who pays his taxes like everyone else. This issue should not be a problem. There have also been speculations that Obama is a Muslim.

The New York Times stated that, “People have gone so far as to accuse him of trying to impose Islamic law on the country, or even call him an Antichrist. ” These accusations are all together extremely ludicrous. Anyone who takes them seriously deserves to be ridiculed. Obama is not a Muslim, and even if he were it should not matter. As stated in the Bill of Rights, Amendment I of the Constitution, “Congress shall make no law respecting on establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise…” It should not matter of someone’s religion, but rather how well they are going to run our country.

In the words of Martin Luther, “I’d rather be ruled by a wise Turk, than a foolish Christian. ” Perhaps the biggest controversial issue going on right now is Obama’s Healthcare Reform. He has been constructing a government funded healthcare plan designed to provide healthcare to any citizen in the United States. While this ultimately seems like a wonderful idea, Republicans think that Obama is leaning towards socialism. No matter what he does President Obama just cannot seem to catch a break.

One has to wonder if people simply do not like him because of what he stands for, or because of his race. In a poll done by Quinnipiac University it was found that most whites think that Obama’s first year as president has mainly been a failure. Also, according to an analysis done by New York Times Obama has the lowest approval rating among whites at the end of his first year in office than any president in the 30 years since the Times has collected this data.

Not to mention, Senator Reid once claimed that “Barrack Obama could become the country’s first black president because he was light-skinned and had no Negro dialect, unless he wanted to have one. ” None of these things are even remotely valid reasons for America to be against President Obama. This is not what America was founded upon. It is now our role in patriotism to stand by President Obama, and help him to help us create change in America.

As George Washington stated in his Farewell Adress, “The name of American, which belongs to you in your national capacity, must always exalt the just pride of patriotism more than appellation derived from local discrimination. With slight shades of difference, you have the same religion, manners, habits, and political principles. You have in a common cause fought and triumphed together; the independence and liberty you possess are the work of joint counsels, and joint efforts of common dangers, sufferings, and successes. ”
