One of the favorite activities in the lives of most kids around the world is playing video games. With improved technology over the years, these games have become very popular among kids because of how different they all are. The games are very entertaining and kind of addictive too. They all use some kind of technique to get you a little more engaged everyday, for example daily bonuses or even when you don’t show up for a long time, you start losing the items or rewards you gained. Researchers have found a link between violent video games and aggressive behaviors. But do video games actually have negative effects on children? Video games are now not only entertainment tools but actually educational tools as well. Entertainment focused games are meant for fun but sometimes they are considered to have educational purposes. In certain games you have decisions to make, decisions that would bring you to different outcomes and responses. Gamers don’t know that they’re learning but they are actually learning how to react in certain situations. Other games like life simulators for example, for teenagers like me who play them, we actually learn how to do things better and more efficiently because in those games when you make the wrong decision, there are consequences, and it automatically brings you to make the right choices. In a report published in Aug. 13, an APA (American Psychological Association) task force looked over more than 100 studies on violent video game usage and said that playing video games can increase aggressive behavior/thoughts and can also lower empathy and sensitivity to aggression as they see it as something normal because they see it all the time and they don’t react the same anymore. They concluded that even though some studies said that there were links to criminal violence, there wasn’t enough evidence to affirm the link. For more than two decades, video games have created a huge impact on how people spend their free time. Each new video game comes with even better graphics and realism. People have been continuing to invent new ones without thinking that they have been affecting so many kids all over the world. Nintendo, a really big video game company, sold three games in average for every second between 1983 and 1995, so that means over one billion games. A game for every teenager in the globe. As you may know, a lot of videos games include violence. Aggression levels of adolescents and children have been affected by violent video games. Teenagers tend to have a more angry reactions or a more defensive reaction to a frustration. Gaming addiction can lead to behaviors including telling lies to loved ones, broken sleep schedules, having difficulties to work for school, decreased time for family and friends, a decrease in child’s social skills because he never goes out with friends and family and also because  most of the games are played alone. Some players use the concepts from video games and that interferes with their real life and perceptions. After gaming, weird behaviors happen, like the constant shaking of hands. Addiction will always have a negative effect to the person and to the people around him. In a lot of studies like the one by Gross and Irwin, they say that children that play violent video games are more likely to show aggressiveness. A high school teenager addicted to video games gives up a lot of time for games instead of reviewing and doing his homework.  But some of the studies show that playing violent video games isn’t that bad after all. Studies say that video games desensitizes gamers to aggression. Which means that having seen so much of this violence, it’s something that they don’t think of doing. During puberty, there is a usual increase in aggression and if this is mixed with teenagers playing violent video games as well, there is an increase in aggressivity. Usually while playing games, you sometimes feel that adrenaline rush when you’re in danger, in difficulty and then when you succeed. When a player experiences an adrenaline rush, he always wants to play even more so he can reach that level of dopamine again. This is a cycle that continues on and on to a point where it becomes unhealthy to play games. Gaming addiction also leads to not finding a place in the society. But for some of them, their society becomes the virtual world they only keep playing games. It doesn’t only provoke an anti-social behavior but also changes the players behavior completely. It’s crucial for a child to develop his imagination during his young ages. But video games don’t work a kid’s imagination. Consequently in his life, this child will have trouble to develop his own creativity since he is used to see a lot of imagination coming from games, not from him. Another problem is that, most of the time, video games teach kids wrong values. In most of the story part of the video games, violent behavior and vengeance are rewarded. Usually no options of nonviolent acts are available to the players. Also, many video games, portray women to be weaker characters, but luckily this is changing since developers are now creating games with girls as the protagonists. In almost all video games, there is always some kind of shooting, killing,  kicking,  different weapons, and stabbing. Social cognitive effects. All of the violent acts  are remembered by the gamers and then may be reincarnated into the real world.  Gamers relate with the characters in the game and think they are the same, they later on find it normal to act the same way the character did in the game, in real life.
