Looking at various perspectives when approaching this question, I
have decided to analyze and examine the natural sciences in addition to the
arts.  These areas of knowledge will show
both perspectives to the claim that ‘with confidence we know little’ and ‘with
knowledge our doubt increases’. Doing so, I will approach these areas through
the attainment of various ways of knowing such as, reason and imagination. The
acknowledgement of several forms of obtaining knowledge is evident in these
areas however, I believe that they are mutually heightened through contrasting
forms. Through the evaluation of the questions “Is the exploration of the arts
subjective?” and “What role does reason play in determining our
confidence in the natural sciences?” I will be able to commit to a conclusion
and analysis of the different ways we obtain knowledge.

 

“Is the exploration of the arts subjective?” is
one of the many questions that had crossed my mind when initiating this
analysis. Through the exploration of the arts we realize that it is truly
subjective, when defining the term ‘subjective’, it is a statement or idea that
is solely based on the foundation of an opinion. Additionally, the term
exploration indicates thorough research on a specific topic. One could say that
the arts is the
expression of creativity which is often shown in the forms of music, photography,
and calligraphy. Therefore, when expressing the means behind the arts we can
infer that our imagination consumes a large role within the process of
understanding these creations. The subjectivity of the arts is arguably one of
the main reasons for the increased acknowledgement of our imagination. However,
with this, external factors such as culture and the society we live in could
influence and alternate the perception of our own being. Looking particularly
into music, it has been considerably one of the most influential forms of art
with its vastly increasing audience. The use of musical
notations such as instrumentation and scores help express the suppressed
meaning behind a musician’s work. In
the composer’s mind their thoughts and feelings are brought out onto a platform.

For example, if a piece of musical piece was played in 2
different parts of the world, Irrelevant of cultural identity or geographical
location, music is still recognized with the same expression and feeling
throughout. Music is very diverse in many different cultures and societies around us, the meaning of music is different to everyone and have their own meaning
to it and how it is expressed.

To highlight the subjectivity of the arts,
imagination plays a role in how a composer produces a composition from scratch.
Understanding and interpreting the meaning of “imagination” when it comes to
the subjectivity in how the composer produces the piece comes down to the
influence and personal experience around the individual. Using Imagination
highlights the true ability of the ideas, images and creativity a human mind
can produce. I know that without imagination the creativity of music would not
be where it is today, through the spread of time music has developed and
changed to where it is today. Throughout the change, imagination played a role
in how composers and artists of that era interpreted and imagined how a piece would sound like to create a
movement. Through the spread of time, composers had come up with musical styles
to support their piece in the specific era that the music composed was based
around.

The baroque era, from the 1600 to 1750. The 19th century is best described
as the western European art music. Baroque music had limitations to how it had
to be played and composed for example, the piece “Come, Ye Sons of Art, Z323” composed by Henry
Purcell had to be composed to fit into the criteria to how baroque music was
composed. Baroque music had to have a structured orchestra no more than the
instruments highlighted below, strings – violins, violas,
cellos and double basses’ woodwind – recorders or wooden flutes, oboes, and
bassoon brass – sometimes trumpets and/or horns (without valves) timpani
(kettledrums) continuo. To add on baroque could only have 3 movements in the
piece, fast, slow, fast. The era was fitted with a set of rules to how the
composer could express themselves, as the music was fitted for occasions for
people to dance. If we were to look at a piece produced by Schoenberg – “Peripetie”,
it is very different and expressive compared to the other piece, pitch
constantly changes, instruments constantly fade in and out, unusual effects and
is performed by a large orchestra. The subjectivity of music in the baroque era
could be questioned as there were a set of rules composers had to abide to
produce their piece, whereas considering the other piece the composer uses
expressionism and no set of rules to compose his piece, therefore music in the
baroque era was subjective as the music produced was fitted for different types
of dances the composer needed to base the piece on, if a composer was to use
expressionism and not follow the set of rules the society would not accept to
listen to the composers work as the influence of music during the 1600’s-1750’s
was based around a set of rules. If a composer were to follow the rules of the
Baroque Era they would have more confidence in their work, since they can
justify that the work produced correlates with the genre they compose in.

 

What role
does reason play in determining our confidence in a scientific conclusion?

Through the “reasoning” in the natural sciences, the knowledge and
theories used can be described as objective rather than subjective. In my perspective,
the natural sciences are considerably an objective form of scientific discoveries where
scientists acquire the knowledge of experiments and various methodologies to
come up with an ideal conclusion.

 

Reason involves making a mindful decision and coming up with a
resolution or conclusion to support the leading hypothesis. The natural
sciences about justifying a theory and forming a statement or conclusion of for
a specific topic of research. Reason is a big factor when approaching the
natural sciences. Judging the reliability of certain information and decide on how
the scientist uses emotion to perceive what is factual and what is not by
evaluating the evidence that is being put forward. The motivational push
towards research and experiments comes from emotion plays a role in how the
scientist feels about the certain topic that is being put forward that
determines the confidence and the reason behind the topic.

 

Emotion is a natural feeling from reasoning or knowledge, such as
happiness or anger. Hence, it works as the opposite of reasoning. The natural
sciences are considered objective and emotion could be arguably a subjective
form within the human body. However. We all acknowledge the fact that emotions
drive us humans, therefore it could drive the scientist to exploring their
field. However, if scientists heavily rely on their emotional involvement it
may lead to being subjective and biased. However, the desire of scientific research
can also be considered as an emotional drive. 

 

Through the emotional drive in the natural sciences this RLS will
support the following statement. “Soldiers who’ve lost limbs in service face a
daily struggle unimaginable to most of us. At TEDMED, Dean Kamen talks about
the profound people and stories that motivated his work to give parts of their
lives back with his design for a remarkable prosthetic arm.” (Dean Kamen, 2009)
Through the emotion he felt towards his personal experience and his beliefs and
efforts, it has led him to come up with a scientific conclusion through the
drive of emotional discomfort. Likewise, I was struck by emotion when I was
assigned a project In Design and Technology. The project given was inspired by a relative’s
disability where they had found it difficult to continue their daily routine
due to arthritis. Since, I was emotionally and physically attached to that
certain individual I was driven to create a product accommodating their needs. Therefore, I had decided to
create a lemon squeezer which met the requirements and necessities of the
individual.
I could
arguably say that, If I had not been aware of my own emotions it would have led
to the failure of this project due to the incapability of understanding the
physical state of individuals suffering from this autoimmune disorder.

 

To conclude, the natural sciences
and the arts are impeccably similar. Analyzing the different genres of music
and the various methodologies in the natural sciences helped me acquire the
knowledge needed to support the question given. We can say that when we are
confident we are untimely believing that what we are taught or given is correct
and definitive. On the other hand, it does not mean that doubt will not be
associated with the knowledge obtained. If we were to look at scientists before
and after an experiment we would soon realize the different level of confidence
they had. When they are seeking for answers and experimenting with the given
data they are unsure of the outcome, relying on a hypothesis to guide them
through the experiment. Whereas, after obtaining their results, they are
certain of the outcome removing the necessity of doubt, untimely increasing
their confidence. This does not mean that their retainment of knowledge is
affected by doubt but instead, it is an assistance required to explore various
aspects within a given area.
