Engineering Disasters Essay

ENGINEERING DISASTERS We can also call Engineering as in invisible science. No one can actually see how it works but it actually exists like an air. Example: Plain flies, building stands and many more. We don’t think how a building can stand weight without collapsing. Similar to apple’s company’s Moto ‘it just works. Here the main problems are not the designs but the material the use up building that design. The concept of total cost minimization is the roots of such accidents that just ruins lives and carrier of people cause after all the one who are weak have to pay in the end.

As a great person said everything is not perfect. There is always a fault that causes blunder to life and property. Here where many projects are brought up and of them many, some are practically implemented and of some few fail. The one which fail cost damage to property and human life. In my view the first worse case is the buffalo creek disaster. This disaster is an accident or tragedy it’s hard to figure out. On the morning of 26 February 1972 the dam that had been build failed.

Although the official was warned about the consequences and dangers of floods, but the residents were not informed. This led to a huge loss. There slightest communication gap with the people cost them their lives. 130 million gallons of water just swept through the narrow valley. This disaster killed 125 people, injured 1,000 and left 4,000 homeless and addition to it more than 500 homes were lost or destroyed, 44 mobile homes were demolished and 273 homes were severely damaged. Also more than 1,000 vehicles, 10 bridges and 30 businesses were destroyed.

Now residents of the coalfields also express their fears of possible floods. Others fear a collapse of similar dams made of coal waste. The ‘federal Surface Mining Control’ and ‘Reclamation Act’ was enacted after that incidence. But luckily so far no dams have broken. Officials claimed the flood was “an act of God”, and argued that there was nothing wrong with the dam. “It was not an ‘Act of God’ that killed 125 people; ‘Mother Nature’ is not responsible for this flooding. It was the negligence of the agency that was suffered by thousands of innocent people.

The company’s take up projects and build up unreliable structures to just get large profits. They use low quality products that end up failing the projects. One more disaster is KVLY Antenna Tower Collapse. The KVLY-TV mast formally called as KTHI-TV mast is 2,063 ft tall and was completed in 1963. It is the 3rd tallest structure in the world after Burj Khalifa and Tokyo Skytree. It is made up of steel. The signals at the top of the tower are so strong they can hurt the fillings in a person’s teeth.

The crew used a vertically-climbing crane to lift each new section of the tower, and the two-section antenna onto the top of the tower. The design is called for 3-legged tower, and as any of the new section was lifted, it was positioned correctly and bolted onto the previous sections of the tower, but only one piece at a time. The two last antenna sections arrived at the site of construction and assembly was preceded as was planned. This section was a little different from all the other sections of the antenna as it had microwave baskets attached to its sides.

The placement crew allowed the antenna to be lifted horizontally, but things messed up and, the baskets interfered with the lifting cables when the antenna was rotated to a vertical position, because of which the unfortunately a disaster happened. On that day during the hoisting of the last section of antenna, something went wrong, and while the antenna was being hoisted, the bolts on the extension failed. The result was a tragedy resulting into the death of four people. It was sad, due to the carelessness of people, people died.

After looking at all of the data and evidences, I feel that I am completely right about my theory that disasters do not occur because god wants them to. It occurs due to the carelessness and negligence of the people. As an engineer, I would agree that we are progressing in every field but It is impossible to be perfect at everything and therefore some errors are expected. As prospective engineers, our job is to minimize the errors which will result into less dangerous situations that will also cause humanity. I feel that as being a human we learn from our mistakes and its our duty do our best and to not repeat them to make a better future.
