The American Civil War was one of the most important and controversial time in American history. The North and the South had developed differences during the years. The South remained mostly in the agricultural economy while the North became more industrialized. The major issue that led to the dissolving of the union was the debate over slavery. That dispute led to secession, and secession brought a war in which the Northern and Western territories fought to preserve the Union while the South fought to establish their own independence as a new confederation under its own constitution.
The Civil War was caused by many conflicts, those conflicts had been increasing for decades and the finally result was a war that lasted four years but the primary cause was slavery between the North and the South. In the Civil War era, the government mostly focused on the institution of slavery and whether they had the right to control or abolish slavery within each individual state. The sides of this debate were largely between northern and southern states constantly expanding the differences in the nation.
The South plantation owners used slaves for many things but mainly in the plantations to perform duties. Slavery was the primarily economy of the South even though only a small portion because slaves could be rented, traded or sold to pay off debts owners had. The ownership of more slaves represented respect and it also included a social position since slaves were property in those days, instead of individuals. Slaves were just businesses to the South and to them it only represented personal wealth, meanwhile, the North abolished slavery.
The North instead of slaves had laborer workers, many of whom could be hired at low wages, and it was better because they did not need to continue slavery. When the Republican candidate Abraham Lincoln won the 1859 presidential election, the South feared that Republicans would abolish slavery completely. Lincoln was an opponent of the expansion of slavery but he would not interfere with the issue. Either way before the South officially separated from the Union; South Carolina had threatened to do this before in the 1830’s.
In the presidency of Andrew Jackson, a tariff was placed and it benefited the Northern manufacturers by increasing the cost of goods in the South. In the end a compromise was made and it prevented a war from occurring until now. The American Civil War was the result of decades of tensions between the North and South. The major issue that led to the dissolving of the union was the debate over slavery and that issue came became worse with the election of Abraham Lincoln in 1860. The war lasted about four years from 1861 to 1865 and the first two years of the war, Southern troops won numerous victories.
After some time however they lost at Gettysburg and Vicksburg in 1863 and eventually the Northern forces conquered the South, making them surrender in April 1865. Citations 1.
